The Legacy of Holy Castle Review

Hoplites, derived from the Greek word hoplon meaning an item of armour or equipment. Thus 'hoplite' may approximate to 'armoured man'. Heavily armored, these units have the highest defense rating but due to the fact that they travel on foot, they are easily slaughtered by the mounted Cavalry men. If hoplites are the soldiers of your army, the Heavy Cavalry are the tanks, slow and menacing, while the Light Cavalry are the military jeeps, moving across the battlefield at twice the speed. With high attack and defense power, though not as much in the case of the Light Cavalry, these units are a must have in any army. But just are tanks are easily destroyed by heavy artillery, Cavalry units are vulnerable to the long, sharp pointed weapons of Pikemen. Pikemen have the highest attacking power out of all the units, but everything has a price. To obtain that power, they paid with their defense and with the loss of their armor, they become the most vulnerable target for the Archer class. Whether it be bows and arrows, rifles, missiles, throwing knives or even slingshots, a battle is never complete without a form of ranged attack. Archers are the weakest of the bunch, low health, attack power, and defensive power, but make up for it with their ability to attack from afar and from behind the safety of other units to act as support units. And like all archers from past to present, the heavily armored units, Hoplites in this case, can easily shrug off their attacks with no problem. Now, you think you're ready to battle? No, not just yet. You know the units, but you don't have any. Unlike other games where you can simply pay for those units, this game is different once again. You need equipment. With the help of your blacksmith, which you can create through construction, you can forge the different kinds of equipment for your army. Swords, Pikes, Bows, Chainmail and Fullplate armor to name them. And for your cavalry, you can create a stable to train horses and for your cavalry men to use. Once you have the required pieces of equipment, all that's left to do is to train them and you're ready. Now that you have equipped your army, trained them, learned the limits of your army, which lies with your hero, and learned the strengths and weaknesses of your units, you are ready to create a battle formation. The game allows one defensive formation and three offensive formations, which you are free to design as you please, with the limitations mentioned above of course. Just note that defense buildings can only be used in the defensive formation, hence the word 'defense'. Strategy plays an important part in both offense and defense, thus your army's strength will be reflected by the strength of your formation, which is reflected by you strategic ability. Remember that no formation is unbeatable. The best way to keep from being defeated, is to change your formation after an attack. That way, your enemy won't be able to predict your strategy. Keep them guessing and you'll be less likely to be defeated. Once you've put your units in the desired formation, all that's left is to look for a castle to attack. A credit rating, which increases the more gold is spent, determines who you can and cannot attack. This prevents stronger players from attacking newbies right off the bat. After finding an appropriate castle, simply choose the hero to send to battle, choose the formation you wish to send, send them off, then await the good, or bad, news. Now that we've gone through the game basics, it's time to know the one aspect that makes this game different from others. Time. Time is the one thing that separates this game from most, if not all, of the other browser games. Whether it's constructing a building, researching technology, training horses, forging equipment, training units, gathering wood, or attacking an enemy castle; time is spent. If you want to reduce the time needed for certain actions, simply increase the level of the proper structure or technology level, wait for it to finish, and once it's done, future tasks will take less time. The application of time is what makes this game truly unique and it is also what makes it playable for everyone. Even if you're busy with school, work or friends, all you need to do is set your castle to the task of building, researching, forging, training and/or attacking, and you can leave it alone. You can also set your hero to train, chop wood, or search and leave it alone as well. There are many other surprises such as the Daily Zodiac, Area Rewards, and the mysterious Sanctuary. But I think it would be best to leave that to you to discover for yourselves. With the application of both time usage and strategy, and with the many details to give it a sense of realism, this is truly a game that everyone must, at the very least, try. Words alone cannot describe greatness, therefore the best way to see how great this game is, is to try it and experience it for yourselves.
